The other teams are Silver Strikers and Dedza Young Soccer.

By invading the pitch, the clubs’s supporters contravened Article 21(16) as read with Article 21(2) of SULOM rules and regulations, according to SULOM Treasurer, Tiya Nsomba Banda.

Bullets faced the offence when some of their followers invaded the pitch following their 2-1 victory over Lilongwe based side, Civo FC, while their city rivals Wanderers’ unidentified support invaded the pitch during the half time of their match against Silver at Kamuzu stadium.

Silver supporters invaded the pitch to celebrate the Bankers’ 2-0 win over Wanderers. Likewise, Mzuni’s and Dedza Young Soccer followers invaded their pitch at the end of their matches against Red Lions and Kamuzu Barracks, respectively.

“Please be reminded that your club is responsible for the actions of your supporters and that you are required to take all the necessary precautions to prevent your supporters invading the pitch before, during, and after the match,” said Banda.

Banda said pitch invasion by Mzuni supporters also threatened the security of the match officials, hence the K300,000 fine.

The family of a football fan, who was assaulted in post-match violence and died in hospital last month after succumbing to serious head injuries has sued Malawi Defence Force (MDF), Red Lions FC, Super League of Malawi (Sulom) and Football Association of Malawi (FAM).

The late Godfrey Mwale's father paying their respects at College of Medicine Mortuary (CoM).

The late Godfrey Mwale’s father paying their respects at College of Medicine Mortuary (CoM).

Godfrey Mwale, who was a 24-year-old college student, was attacked about 500m from the Kamuzu Stadium on 10 May.

The incident happened as violence spilled over to the streets following a Super League match involving Surestream FC and MDF side Red Lions.

Mwale suffered acute hematoma as a result of head trauma and swelling of the brain, and did not recover.

Stanley Mwale, father to Geoffrey, confirmed to Nyasa Times that he has sued the teams through private practice lawyer through John Gift Mwakhwawa for justice to take its course.

Mwale, who is senior police officer said his son was assaulted despite that he was not in the wrong.

“I have sued Malawi Defence Force, Red Lions, Sulom and Fam because it pains me and the family as whole to lose such an innocent son just because of football when he was not involved in the violence,” Mwale said.

“The place where he was beaten was not at the football match. He was attacked at a bus depot while waiting to board a bus,” said Mwale.

He said the lawyers would proceed with legal action for the death of his son , who died at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital where he was being treated.

The game between Surestream ended in a two-all draw amid controversial goals from the team now FISD Wizards FC.

Trouble flared after Red Lions players assaulted referee Borniface Chipinga following the final whistle, angry with him for a penalty he awarded to Wizards in the dying minutes.

Some fans responded by smashing Red Lions’ team bus and soldiers were called to the scene from a nearby army base at Chichiri.

But so far nobody has been arrested by Malawi Police Service raising suspicion that the soldiers were ordered to beat fans by a senior MDF officer in revenge for smashing windows of their team bus.

Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has admitted that it is becoming very difficult to control the number of supporters patronizing super league games at the country’s soccer cathedral Kamuzu stadium particularly games involving big teams.

This follows last weekend’s Blantyre derby involving old age rivals Mighty Be Forward Wanderers and Big Bullets in which the stadium flooded beyond its capacity putting lives of people at risk.

“It is very hard for us to control people entering the stadium,” said Suleman.

Suleman suggested that the best way is for the government with assistance from relevant stakeholders including the corporate world to construct a new stadium in Blantyre.

“This is the time we should get a big and better stadium in Blantyre” he said.

The capacity of Kamuzu stadium was reduced in 2009 to a capacity of about 20,000 people on safety grounds after it was revealed that some parts of the stadium were in a very bad shape and needed renovation.

Meanwhile, veteran soccer analyst Charles Nyirenda and sports journalist Leonard Sharra of Montfort Media have also ordered the government, Sulom and the local soccer governing body Football Association of Malawi (FAM) to take action by putting strong measures to ensure that the stadium never park beyond capacity.

Southern Region Police deputy commissioner Foster Mangani had claimed the victim was shot as he attempted to grab a gun from a police officer.

But visit at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital by Sulom Treasurer, Tiya Somba Banda, however revealed that the boy was not shot as it has been widely reported, rather the bullet only bruised his stomach without causing any internal damage.

His condition was not critical as it was feared.

Sleeping on his bed in Ward 5A surrounded by his parents, the boy only managed to speak for three minutes: “I am alright but l cannot really remember what happen because there was a commotion.”

Commenting on the boy’s condition, who is 21 years, Banda told Nyasa Times: “We thank God that the young man has tremendously improved and that his condition is now very stable.”

Banda also said as Sulom they condemn any of illegal activities in and around the stadium. He commended the police for containing the situation.

“We would like to assure the public and the peace loving soccer Malawians that the football arenas will continue to be peaceful and secure,” said Banda.

Banda also pleaded with the media to desist from sensationalism as it may damage the game of football and may deter the corporate world from investing in the game.

During the match, there were a number of notable developments like the match being stopped on two occasions due to teargas, which was dispersed by the police outside the stadium to restore order when chaos erupted.

According to Mangani, hell broke loose when some people were trying to prevent the police from arresting a person who had allegedly stolen a mobile phone.

He said cops acted swiftly by firing teargas to calm the situation.

“The incident had nothing to do with the match. Here was someone who was trying to snatch a rifle from a police officer who was trying to calm the situation. Even if it were you, what could you have done? “Mangani was quoted in the press.

During the match, Wanderers came from behind to draw 1-1 with Moyale Barracks.

The Nomads now have 25 points from 13 games—four short of leaders Big Bullets.

The committee has appealed to well wishers to help them with computer for its secretariat office.

The association, which is the only region with a lot of teams in its league, has three divisions namely Premier League, Division One and Two with total of 60 teams.

It has been using note books to keep records of players, log table and fixtures were being sent to the media and teams through text messages and they were using Internet cafe.

Presenting the laptop, Somba Banda who is also acting Sulom secretary general, said he appreciates the great contributions central region league is making to football in the country.

He noted that central region teams that are promoted into the Super League hardly drop, which is a clear indication of how good is the Chipiku central region league.

“The vision we have as a country is to professionalise the game and we can only achieve that if we run our leagues professionally. Having accurate statistics is critical in managing football therefore this laptop is a springboard towards achieving the vision as it will help them to keep all vital information of the association in it,” Somba Banda said.

General Secretary of Centra Region Football Association, Bernard Chiwiruwiru Harawa ,said he was “so grateful” for the donation.

Harawa has since called on other well wishers to help them with some office furniture to completely have a whole secretarial set up as of now it’s only the laptop which they have received from Somba Banda.

[caption id="attachment_91057" align="alignright" width="600"]Bullets playerss celebrating unbeaten run and title charge - Photo-Jeromy-Kadewere Bullets playerss celebrating unbeaten run and title charge - Photo-Jeromy-Kadewere[/caption] A letter from Sulom dated August 19 gave Bullets 72 hours to respond to the charge. “Reference is made to the complaint we received from Mzuni FC on your actions upon the intent to transfer of Niyikiza Aimable to Big Bullets football club. It is been alleged that the player has been training with Big Bullets without the permission of Mzuni FC up to the extent that you used the player during, the weekend of 7th and 8th August,” the letter signed by Sulom acting CEO Tiya Somba Banda reads in part. Sulom reminded Bullets that their action is contrary to Article 13.1.4 Super League of Malawi Constitution as read with Article 4.1 of the Football Association of Malawi Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players. The top flight league body have also charged the player for training with Bullets without the permission of his club and playing for the Bullets at the Inter City Charity Trophy. Bullets and the player had not yet responded to the charge. But Bullets deputy general secretary Kelvin Moyo earlier said the player in mention was a free agent after he had no contract with Mzuni FC. Moyo also said the player resigned from Mzuni FC. On the pitch, Bullets continue to delight and maintain unbeaten run in all competitions; off it they are controversial.

Suleman: Brains behind Mpira Sacco idea

Malawi’s flagship league runners Super League of Malawi (SULOM) has engaged an extra gear in a bid to improve the welfare of the players. [caption id="attachment_43342" align="alignright" width="476"]Suleman: Brains behind Mpira Sacco idea Suleman: Brains behind Mpira Sacco idea[/caption] Super League of Malawi Treasurer Tiya Somba Banda said the league runners would hold sensitization meetings in Blantyre, Zomba, Lilongwe, Salima and Mzuzu targeting 15 Super League clubs on the establishment of Mpira SACCO. “For Mpira SACCO to become fully registered and licensed by MUSCCO and the Reserve Bank of Malawi, there are a number of key steps that have to be taken to ensure that all requirements, both operational and legal, have been met,” Tiya Somba said in a statement. “One of these requirements is the need for all prospective members to have a full understanding of the business and nature of a SACCO. It is in the light of this requirement that MUSSCO in conjunction with SULOM have organized the following sensitization meetings with football clubs that participate in the TNM Super League.” He said the formation of the Mpira SACCO sits at the center of the drive part of the strategic objective of commercializing and professionalization of the elite football league in Malawi. “Mpira SACCO shall seek to reduce the financial inclusive gap around our football players at the same time allowing them access to financial tools that will enable them to save part of their money and access credit facilities,” he said. All SACCOs in Malawi fall within regulatory and legal frameworks, which require certain basic requirements to be met before registration of the SACCO. SULOM has been engaging MUSCCO in the past months to fully appreciate the requirements and to position itself accordingly for the undertaking. “As SULOM, our desire is to improve the status and welfare of our football player. This cannot be attained if access to financial services is still prohibitive and at times very unfavourable to our players. Mpira SACCO will be the perfect last piece in the puzzle.” One of the requirements for the SACCO to be established is it must secure a minimum of 500 members. SULOM has said with all the teams expected to be members it will be short of just 50 members to achieve 500. The shortfall will be met by extending the membership to lower league teams across the country. The idea to have Mpira SACCO was hatched by Sulom Vice-President Daud Suleman as one way of improving the welfare of players

Swam president Peter Kanjere launched the code of conduct booklet on Friday during a day-long workshop which the Super League of Malawi (Sulom) funded at Crown Hotel, Lilongwe. Sulom legal adviser, Gilbert Mittawa, opened the workshop which also featured Fifa referees instructor Verson Lwanja drilling the reporters on the Laws of the Game. Mittawa called on the sports media practitioners to be responsible and sensitive when covering matches especially through live match commentaries. Veteran football commentator Steve Liwewe Banda also echoed Mittawa's sentiments saying commentators need to exercise common sense and research before going on air. Swam boar chairperson Gracian Tukula encouraged the association to walk the talk in enforcing the code lest it becomes a talk show. The 10-paged document gives sports reporters guidelines on Statutory Duty, The Public Interest, Ethical Conduct, Professional Conduct, Conflict of Interest, Confidentiality, Professional Development, Advertising, Trust, Errors, False Informational and Law. "The code of conduct reflects the ethos and culture and the spirit of the law governing it. It identifies the key principles and values that should guide day-to-day practices and emphasises the core values that are to be honoured"

Sulom chair Botomani: Vhanges in gate taking

Teams in the country’s flagship league, the TNM Super League (SL) will no longer be getting their gate revenue shares on the source of the collection, the gates, it has been confirmed. [caption id="attachment_43048" align="alignright" width="600"]Sulom chair Botomani: Vhanges in gate taking Sulom chair Botomani: Vhanges in gate taking[/caption] The clubs will be receiving their shares through bank deposits, the Super League of Malawi (SULOM) has announced. SULOM President Innocent Botomani has said that the decision was reached out after a wide consultation although certain quarters seem not to be comfortable with the arrangement. The issue was brought to light last month during a club licensing seminar organized by the country’s football governing body, the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) in Blantyre. The arrangement will not affect those detailed to perform security, first aid and officiating duties, as along with ground owners they will continue getting their dues after the counting of the collection is done, per their respective allocations or percentages. It is in a way aimed at enhancing accountability in the gate collection to individual teams as there are times when money has grown wings after the teams have been given their allocation but before the cash is accounted for to the teams. “Change is always received with mixed feelings as such we cannot expect every person to be in total agreement with the arrangement but all in all, from this weekend we are rolling out the procedure and teams have just to practice patience, after all it is for their own good,” said Botomani. The second round of the league kicks off today with a re-launch taking place in Dwangwa where defending league and first round champions Big B ullets takes on Mafco, the hosts. In other games FISD Wizards play host to Civo United while KB hosts Azam Tigers. Tomorrow Wanderers hosts Civo, Mzuni-Slver Strikers, Blue Eagles- Airborne Rangers, while the sensational Dedza hosts Red Lions. The league is sponsored to the tune of MK90million by Malawi's premier mobile network, TNM Limited.

Each club pocketed K3 million, while Football Association of Malawi and Sulom went home with K1.2 million. However, Banda said they have instituted an investigation into the matter because they feel something is fishy. The first round match involving the two teams at Kamuzu Stadium grossed almost K27 million, while the Carlsberg Cup Finals in Lilongwe at Civo Stadium collected K29 million. Banda told local Newspaper that whoever is going to be found wrong will have to face the consequences. He said Sulom will involve the police and that the law will take its course. George Chamangwana: Under fire by some sections of supporters

Super League of Malawi (Sulom) General Secretary Williams Banda has confirmed that his association will intervene and act as a mediator to end leadership wrangles that have engulfed the Mighty Be Forward Wanderers family. [caption id="attachment_63475" align="alignright" width="348"]George Chamangwana: Under fire by some sections of supporters George Chamangwana: Under fire by some sections of supporters[/caption] There have been disagreements between the team Executive Committee and a section of some supporters who now claim to have dissolved the club executive committee chaired by George Chamangwana as well as the main supporters committee. They claim to have appointed Chipiliro Mpinganjira to lead the new executive committee. The development comes as a result of the Nomads recent poor form. But Banda on Tuesday advised teams to always learn to give room for contact and dialogue. He therefore promised that his association will bring together the disgruntled Mighty Be Forward supporters and executive committee as soon as possible to map the way forward. According to Banda, the matter is being treated as urgent to ensure that they should not aggravate the situation at Nomads which he said can further affect the perfomance of the team. Meanwhile, one of Wanderers supporters who was tipped to lead the Nomads supporters family in the Central Region , Matthews Kimu Kamau has rejected his appointment describing it as illegal. "Much as I appreciate the confidence shown in me by Nomads supporters who believe I have the abilities to assist the team by holding such an important position, I feel the appointment is inappropriate and illegal" Kimu Kamau said in a statement. He therefore pleaded with all supporters to wait for team's annual general meeting slated for March 2016 to elect new office bearers. "The current executive committee was legally elected and must be voted out legally as well," said Kim Kamau. According to Kamau, the executive committee led by Chamangwana has done a great job by among other things landing a lucrative sponsorship deal from Be Forward Company. He therefore warned that internal wrangles might cost the team sponsorship the way it previously happened with Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL). "I am afraid that such quarrels within Wanderers family are giving the sponsors very bad publicity which may compromise the relationship. We should remember that the team lost sponsorship from MTL some five years ago partly due to the same in-house wrangles" warned Kimu Kamau. Sponsors, Japanese car dealers, Be Forward have said they are “monitoring the situation” at the Lali Lubani Road.

William Banda: It will not start next season

An agreement between Super League of Malawi (Sulom) and Mighty Be Forward Wanderers on the wrangles that erupted at Lali Lubani Road has been reached to allow the current executive committee headed by George Chamangwana to complete their tenure of office before the Annual General Meeting at the end of the 2015 season. [caption id="attachment_45017" align="alignright" width="330"]William Banda: Sulom mediates Wanderers standoff William Banda: Sulom mediates Wanderers standoff[/caption] After Wanderers against Blue Eagles game last week, a certain section of supporters fired the current executive committee only maintaining Mike Butao as the general secretary. However, Sulom intervened to mediate the two camps to sort out their wrangles. In a letter dated 24 November 2015, signed by Sulom general secretary Williams Banda reads: “We write to advise that following the meeting between Super League of Malawi and Be Forward Wanderers on the impasse that was there the following has been agreed: That the incumbent executive committee led by Mr. George Chamangwana complete their tenure of office.” Banda said they have also agreed that the Be Forward Wanderers Trustees call for an Elective Annual General Meeting at the end of the 2015 TNM Super League Season. “That current committee should prepare and present reports at the AGM. Audited accounts and a copy of their statutes should be submitted to SULOM. SULOM to preside over the elections,” said Banda. This season the Nomads won the Carlsberg Cup after clipping Big Bullets 2-1 before reaching the Standard Bank Cup finals where they lost 1-0 to Civo United. However, in the league things are all not rosy for the Nomads as they occupy seventh position.

Striker Richard Mbulu and a Mr. Sichali were also found guilty by the Sulom disciplinary committee for brawl and threats issued to referee of the day Wanneck Mlenga. The other count is that of pitch invasion in which Mbulu who was red carded during the game and Sichali who was sent to sit at open stands were found in the field of play after the fracas erupted. The two have been fined K150,000.00 each as per article 22.L and K15,000.00 is for clearing the red card shown to Mbulu plus an extra K20,000.00 for being sent off for the third time as per article 22. Mbulu and Dave Banda of Kamuzu Barracks have made a record of their own this season for being sent off three times. Mbulu who obviously seem to be the major culprit in the whole ordeal has also been fined K250,000.00 for jumping over the fence which is contrary to article 21.12. All the fines are totaling to K605,000.00 and are to be paid before Mafco's next fixture without fail this is according to the statement.

We are going to start implementing what we agreed during our executive committee meeting,” Banda said. “This might take even time especially in the 2017.” He said there were a lot of issues to be sorted out to avoid creating confusion when implementing this decision. Following the declaration that SULOM would increase the number of teams to 16 for the league to have an even number so that no team would be on bye there has been a lot of talk on the fate of three teams fighting relegation. Currently FISD Wizzards who on bottom of the table, Epac FC and Airborne Rangers are destined for relegation with less than three weeks before the end of the season. Bullets won the league after managing unassailable 57 points and have three games to wrap the season.

The strikers will now share the Mk100,000 that was put aside for the golden boot award winner. However, Msowoya and Bokosi failed to match the record set by Moyale Barrack’s Gastin Simkonda who netted 17 goals last season. Chiukepo however said he was glad to win the award which he last clinched in 2007 with 17 goals.

Dedza players were denied dressing room

Relegation survivors Epac FC and relegated Dedza Young Soccer have been slammed with fines by the Super League of Malawi (Sulom) following the two sides improper conducts and breach of Sulom's constitutional Rules and Regulations. [caption id="attachment_89606" align="alignright" width="600"]Dedza players were denied dressing room Dedza players were denied dressing room[/caption] This follows some unsporting behaviour that happened during a decisive do or die encounter between the two sides on 19th December, 2015 at the Civo Stadium in Lilongwe. Epac FC supporters blocked Dedza Young Soccer players and officials from using the dressing room. Sulom Disciplinary Commitee at a meeting convened on 31st December, 2015 at the Lilongwe Hotel found Epac guilty of two charges. The first charge was failing to control the actions of its supporters who blocked the entrance in the dressing room therefore preventing players and officials from entering the dressing. This attracted a fine of K450,000.00. The other charge was bringing the game of football into disrepute contrary to article 14 of the Sulom Constitution with article 21 (16) of Sulom Rules and Regulations which attracted a fine of K350,000.00. Thus means that Epac need to pay a total of K800,000.00 before its next league or cup game. Thorough investigations by Sulom disciplinary committee and police report, Dedza Young Soccer were not involved in blocking the entrance of the dressing room but they have been fined K500,000.00 for bringing the game of football into disrepute. Sulom observed that there was security lapse in dressing room corridor despite hiring 50 Police Officers hence a need to organize a security sensitization workshop before the start of next season.
